Assistant Professor of Art History Meghen Jones receives a Japanese Studies Fellowship

Assistant Professor of Art History Meghen Jones received a Japanese Studies Fellowship from the Japan Foundation for the spring and summer of 2017. The fellowship, according to the Japan Foundation’s web site “provides preeminent foreign scholars and researchers in the field of Japanese Studies with opportunities to conduct research in Japan with the aim of supporting them and promoting Japanese Studies overseas.”

She will conduct research at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, Kyoto, investigating the history of tea bowls as exemplars of ceramic expression in Japan and beyond, from the sixteenth century to the present. Her focus will be to consider the tea bowl from two perspectives—as an important idiom within the context of Japanese aesthetic and social histories, as well as a matrix of formal elements and ideologies within the discourse of contemporary Euro-American ceramic art.
