Global Asia students connect with NYC gallery

February 2, 2018

Students enrolled in the Fall 2017 Global Arts: Contemporary Asian Art in a Transnational Age served as jurors for the apexart gallery’s roster of exhibitions in 2018. Located in TriBeCa, NYC, apexart [https://apexart.org/] is a non-profit gallery that showcases work by independent artists and curators from around the world.

Prof. Hope Childers learned of their crowdsourced jurying process and signed up her class of 21 students to participate. On average, students reviewed around 60 proposals over the month of November, rating each according to a rubric provided by the gallery. Alfred’s School of Art & Design students join other prestigious art institutions that have participated, including Parsons, RISD, MICA, and more.

Overall, students reported that the process was illuminating and rewarding, giving them insight into how curators compose and pitch their exhibition proposals. Prof. Childers plans to do this again with her Global Arts class in Fall 2018!
